Did the Grizzlies Screw Up the Bench? E-mail

Did the Grizzlies screw up their bench this year?

Wow. Can you believe after the disaster that was the Grizzlies bench last season that this question can even be asked?

But it is being asked and for good reason.

The bench isn't better than last season at this time. Last season's bench was horrible and the changes made by the team appear to have only made it worse.

But why? It has a lot to do with the lack of veteran presence anywhere. Last season fans complained about Quinton Ross. He is starting for Dallas now. People hated Greg Buckner saying he was over the hill but he brought consistent veteran leadership when he was on the court too. Marco Jaric was not even invited to come to training camp this season and yet his veteran presence could have been a stabilizing influence on a young team with the right attitude. Darko Milicic was a strong defensive center and while no one is arguing that Randolph isn't an improvement over Milicic, his absence on the bench is noticeable. Hasheem Thabeet has been painful to watch on most nights. Hamed Haddadi hasn't been an improvement.

Hopefully, Sam Young and DeMarre Carroll will be better than Ross and Buckner at some point in their careers but they aren't right now. Their inexperience and the lack of a positive role model coming off the bench with them has contributed as much as to their slow start as anything else. Rookies can start strong. Rookies can contribute right away but it is much easier for a rookie to do these things with a strong veteran leader helping him along.

It's not who is on the bench. it's who is not on the bench that is the main problem.

The LA Clippers announcers said when AI left the locker room that the players were saying it was like a breath of fresh air. That AI sucked the life out of the team. This is the man the team courted so furiously this summer?

Allen Iverson should learn from other teams in our division who have superior players coming off the bench too. Dallas has Q Ross starting and Jason Terry coming off the bench. San Antonio has Michael Finley starting and Manu Ginobili coming off the bench. There is NOTHING wrong with helping the team by filling a need that has to be filled. So come back AI and play the role the coach assigns you to the best of your ability.

People also don't realize how much the bench misses Darrell Arthur. DA was a disaster starting last season but would have been a big help coming off the bench this year. His injury really left a gaping hole on the roster that was unexpected when the Grizzlies released Hakim. In hindsight I wish the Grizzlies would have kept Hak but who knew that AI would pull a disappearing act after 3 games and that DA would be injured for over half the season?

So the bench has talent that needs to mature, get healthy and a great scoring option that needs to mature as well despite being 34. Take the best two players off of any team's bench and they would struggle for a while. With a little experience, an easier schedule and some positive results in games the bench should end the season stronger than last season's bench.

It is just going to take a while to get there.

Conley was a #4 pick by the way - Al Horford went 3rd in that draft (who Grizzlies most needed and coveted). Imagine a team of Kyle Lowry, Mike Miller, Rudy Gay, HOrford, and Pau Gasol. They could have been pretty decent. I never liked him and understood why he ranked so high before the draft. I haven't liked a single draft pick we've made since I can remember. Dhantay Jones perhaps. Battier obviously was a good one. anyone else think of a good one?

Chip, will you ever get it? Jason Terry plays 35 minutes a game and is out there in crunch time. Jesus quit making that garbage comparison. Ben Gordon plays 37 minutes a game and is also out there in crunch time. AI was getting 22 and being removed at the end of the game. You are going to say, "AI was injured during training camp and missed the first 3 games." Whatever, he could have come back earlier, but the Heisley wouldnt allow it. He was ready to go, he didnt need to be babied back into the lineup. Hes a 14 year veteran, im sure he can figure out how to play with this incompetent team. Mike Conley has no business starting over AI. There is nothing "that will be better for the team" with AI coming off the bench. They are 1-8 and going nowhere fast. The biggest problem with this team is that they have no fire, no drive. its embarrassing to watch them play. OJ Mayo, no matter how good or bad he plays is the only guy i see with that competitive spirit. And your comment about the announcers saying it was "like a breath of fresh air" when AI left is also retarded. Ya, the only guy on the team who really wants to win and is venting over the frustration of losing is gone. good. now we can all act like everything is OK and accept our losing ways. He doesnt deserve this kind of treatment from this type of organization. Now we are hearing reports from the joke Ronald Tillery that "had AI been around he would have started the last game." Now that the team has completely lost any hope of doing anything significant this year, hollins realizes that maybe AI should start and get tons of minutes. Day late and a dollar short.

AI had only played 3 games, and had made negative comments after the first game. If he played 10 games, was fully fit and was playing well and still wasn't finishing games, I think you would have a better point. He was 3 games back from a hamstring injury, on a team he doesn't know properly because he didn't play preseason. Other then in Memphis (potentially) AI will never start in this league again. Some fans haven't realised that yet. This 1-8 team was the only team that made him an offer for a bench spot.

My dissappointment with the bench is the lack of 3 point shooting/scoring. For the first 5 or so games, they played an uptempo style of ball, and the bench are all defensive orientated players. It's all mixed up. Either draft uptempo guys who fit, like other teams like the Suns or Nugs do.. or draft defensive orientated players, and play defensively from the very first game of the season like it's a deliberate plan. Being young and inexperienced just makes it ten times worse.
