Ronnie Brewer, Come On Down! E-mail

Well, well. The "rumored deals never go down" cliche seems to have suffered all sorts of wounds over the last couple of days....the deal bearing the most relevance to Griz fans, of course, is the fact that Ronnie Brewer hasĀ  been acquired from the Utah Jazz for a protected first-rounder in 2011. YAY! He's the one i wanted most out of the various names mentioned over the last several weeks, including Roger Mason Jr., Dorrell Wright, Sergio Rodgriguez, et. al.

Brewer has averaged 9.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in varying roles for the Jazz this year, and is an Arkansas kid from a basketball family, and, according to the esteemed Chris Vernon, is a super nice guy.

Am I happy the Grizz did this? An unquestioned HELL YES! Do I have a guess as to how it went down? Yes, I do. The deal had been rumored, first by the Commercial Appeal, for weeks, and my (unsubstantiated) belief is that in its earlier iterations, the deal would have been for the proverbial "year 2046 second rounder protected to 59". However, the Grizzlies' recent struggles obviously lit a fire under Heisley's rear and made him more likely to approve a trade where a more valuable asset like a first-rounder would be a palatable price to pay. Brewer is 6'7" and not a toothpick, and is a darned good player on both ends (although he'll do NOTHING to improve the team's 3-pt shooting).

No idea if he'll be in uniform tomorrow night for the Heat home game, but I'd imagine that he'll be around to play against the Lakers at home Tuesday, perhaps even the game at NJN Sunday.

Sure, maybe more or different moves might have been better-but Brewer is a restricted free agent this summer, so he'll be auditioning (hopefully) his top A-game for the whole league for the remainder of the season in Beale Street Blue.

Good move Grizzlies.

Sooooo a guy that can't shoot or create his own shot is worth a first round pick? His best asset is being 6'7" with long arms! He got his points b/c of Deron Williams getting him easy shots! So now he comes to Memphis where our PG is terrible and won't get him the easy shots he's accustomed to. I'd rather keep the first round pick and get a guy that has skills to go along with that size.

I'm am I huge Utah Jazz fan and I was very sad to see Brewer go. You all got a very good player who can help create shots for others, steal the ball, and get your crowd involved. I don't know if it was a good trade on Utah's part but don't beat yourself up Counte you got a good player and he will be missed in Utah.

ever heard of a thing called defense? we have plenty of people to create their own shot (randolph/mayo/gay and even conley/gasol/young) and brewer is a shut down perimeter defender to match up with mayo. im just surprised that matt didn't say anything about gay. doesnt this trade mean gay is a goner this summer? if we didnt pay him before, i cant see why we would pay him AND a guy with a similar skill set who is cheaper. i think the grizz personnell feel theyll have enough offense with mayo/randolph/gasol and with 3 1st-rounders to let gay go and keep brewer's defense

@ ryne-I don't think that this means that Gay is gone. Heisley told Chip explicitly that he intends to match any offer for Rudy. I do think that maybe if he does get offered max money, that a sign-and-trade could enter the equation, but I don't know how many teams will really be willing to max Rudy Gay. We'll see. There will be tons of teams with tons of cash, but will they really think that Rudy is worth more than what the Grizzlies offered Josh Smith (which I think is the ceiling of what the Griz will offer)?

@Counte-understo od that Brewer and Desmond Mason have undoubtedly the worst-looking jumpshots in the current NBA, but to your point about getting someone with that first we haven't given up yet, do we really want this team to get YOUNGER??? Brewer was born in '85, so he's just about to enter his prime as an NBA swingman, and already has plenty of regular-season and playoff experience. IMO this is a better choice than another completely unproven NBA quantity, which is what any draft pick is by definition.

i think rudy will get a max simply because he is still loaded with upside and potential, hes shown improvement every year and doesnt seem to be showing any effects of playing on a horrible team, and there are simply too many teams who are tanking this season to get some FAs next year that there will simply not be enough guys out there and teams' fans will expect them to do SOMETHING with their cap space that they will be FORCED to offer all the money they have left on the next best consolation prize. im putting money that rudy is a clipper next season. poor poor rudy

i like the move even if he cant shoot 3's hes still alot better than anybody esle we can bring off the bench he could be a great 6th man who can play the 2 n the 3 . i really like everything the grizzlies are doing except the point guard position. conley is a great solid back ter in this league once they can fill the pg spot and give all this young guys time to gel togther we should be competitive for years

1 - Brewer is brought in to fill a couple needs - Defense, and possible bench scoring - someone besides Sam Young that will drive to the basket.
2 - Brewer and Gay are not the same player. Getting Brewer does not mean Rudy is leaving simply because they sometimes play the same position.
3 - We gave up a lottery protected 2011 pick for a guy who has been starting for a team with the 3rd best record in the Western conference. Have a little perspective, folks. We see how our 3 picks from last year are performing - We wouldn't be able to trade ANY of them straight up for Brewer without getting laughs. People who are saying we gave up too much are either a) overvaluing a likely (hopefully) non lottery 2011 pick, or b) the kinds of folks who would be complaining if we gave him up for a stack of AI jerseys.

Nice!

And this trade has nothing to do with Rudy and everything to do with the bench!

Great move for the Grizz. Wouldn't be surprised to see the lineup of OJ, Brewer, Gay, Randolph, Gasol before the end of the season.

I'm no longer sure if we will match offers for Rudy or we will look to deal him, but here is the problem I"ve realized....

Yes, good players deserve to be paid well and I understand that a star is going to make money- but WHY do NBA players believe they should get paid 20 million dollars? CEOs of Fortune 500 companies don't make 20 million dollars a year. Its just ridiculous. And the worst part is the NBA, its fans, and its sponsors are all encouraging it/ enabling it. A good, but by no means great or franchise player like Rudy Gay has no business making 15-20 million dollars a year. it is simply unbelievable. He isn't even the best player on this team. Arguably the 3rd or 4th most valuable player in our lineup...

The owners really need to make a stand and let these players know that getting paid -8 million dollars a year isn't a crime. It's a privilege. Grow up. You get paid more than 99% of America. Stop crying.

I think it is an excellent move. The good thing about Brewer is that he is a contributing player from a winning program. He will immidietly become the leader of the bench, wich hopefully will do wonders for Carroll & Young. I see him as a good fit with Conley in the backcourt as well as Mayo. It gives them a huge closing lineup with mayo sliding to the 1. Will be exciting to see him run the break with gay and conley. Great size.

With Arthur back the bench is finally looking a bit up.

Side note:

I see alot of comments about mike conley and the need to replace him. I understand the concerns, and his play hasnt excactly been convincing, but in his spurts of good play he shows some real special tools. If he can get it together I believe he will be a legit starting PG in the league. Not moving him or bringing in another PG at the deadline gives him the rest of the season to convince the suits. Go Mike, Im rooting for you.

Conley won't hit the bench with the Grizz fighting for the playoffs. Even though he's not a great choice at the PG spot, the team has good chemistry with him starting and to put OJ in the mix at this point would hurt the team. So expect to see Conley start until the Grizz are out of contention (hopefully they stay in contention).
I've heard of defense and I'm a big fan of defense. Brewer is a solid defender but he's going to give up some points, just the nature of the business. I just know when he's a liability 10 feet away from the basket. You want him shooting that shot. When he's on the court, you double team off of him and he won't make you pay. We all know that's true.
I know we gave up a first rounder next year and we don't need to get younger but I'm not impressed by Brewer. And to the guy that said Brewer and Gay have the same skills, please watch some games before making a comment like that again. Rudy's got game, it's the intensity that's always been in question for him. I sure hope nobody throws foolish money at him so we can keep him in Memphis.

I said similar skill set, not the same, which no expert will argue with. Brewer's skill at mil is proportional to Rudy's at mil. Please watch some Jazz games before you start analyzing Brewer like he's been playing in your backyard for the last 10 years.

Hollinger gives the Grizzlies a B+ for the trade. This is a quote from his insider article Report card time: Grading the trades

Quote:

Grizzlies: Memphis had been angling for Brewer for a while. His contract is set to expire, but the Griz can make him a qualifying offer as a restricted free agent and likely retain him cheaply, so he could be in Memphis for some time. As a local product who played college at nearby Arkansas, he has more incentive to stay than most Memphis free agents.

Brewer will immediately upgrade a horrid bench, where he'll presumably become the first wing to check in. He can't space the floor, but he doesn't need the ball to be effective, either -- he gets his points off cuts, transitions and second shots. He hasn't been as effective this season as in past seasons, but on a per-dollar basis, it's tough to argue with this deal. Whomever the Grizzlies would have selected with a mid-first-round pick in 2011 was unlikely to outproduce what Brewer will give them. Grade: B+

Brewer is a team player, and a smart player. Reliable and focused. The Jazz are losing a proven player. The Grizzlies are gaining another foundation block for their team.

This pick up by Memphis makes me an instant fan. I'm from Arkansas and always root for the players from the state so I will definitely look into purchasing some Grizzlies tickets. I believe getting Brewer will draw more fans from Arkansas (we are very faithful to our players) to Memphis to catch a game. I'm very excited to watch Ronnie play again. Go Grizzlies!!!!
